About me

Antonín Gavlas, an artist from Ostrava, born in 1953 in Nový Jičín, studied at the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Education at Masaryk University in Brno (majoring in Art Education and Mathematics).

In his work, he employs a wide range of approaches and techniques—from true encaustic painting, acrylics, and graphic art to ceramics, enamels, and sculpture. Across all these techniques, however, he usually explores a unified theme: a kind of universal idea of the unity of humanity, nature, and the universe. His works thus depict mysterious landscapes or cosmic distances filled with light. Light here is not only an important artistic effect but rather a goal—a symbol of something beautiful and positive toward which we all strive.

He is a promoter of the highly unique painting technique of encaustic. True encaustic, originating in Ancient Egypt, offers many creative possibilities, including the use of distinctive colors, textures, glazes, and interesting effects. However, it is very complex and demanding, which is why only a small number of artists worldwide practice it.

He organized over 80 individual exhibitions and attended more then 200 combined in the Czech Republic, England, Belgium, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, Mexico and the USA. He also attended around 20 international art symposiums - from which he helped organized many himself. He's a member of the Union of Czech artists and the president of Art association IN SIGNUM.
